We prepare for every minute detail-information, waste lot of money -buying all the magazines (none costs less than 50 Rs.) Newspapers, books and material, xerox, notes and so on....
yet UPSC doesn't ask anything from it in order to teach a lesson to big coaching classes @ Delhi. ok no problem but then why do you(UPSC) make us innocent bystanders-waste so much of our money
and time in the fruitless exercise.
Our Constitution provides for 'right to live' and supreme court has said right to live also means right to live with dignity. Almost all of us are mentally tortured because of the competitive exams' faulty style.(UPSC,railway, state public service you name anything.....
  • Government of india should make a 'Date Law' means earth-day, blood donation day, bird day, snake day, fathers day, mother's day, cancer day, some famous mens' birthday deathday etc. everything will be celebrated only on the 1st January every year. so no one has to cram so many dates for any competitive exam.
  • Small nations' leaders like Boni Yayi must not be invited to visit India,Only the big players like Obama should be invited to visit india, so its not very difficult for us to remember it for the competitive exam.
  • Padma shree/bhushan/Shanti-Swaroop Bhatnagar award etc things must be either abolished or give it to only 1 person per year so we don't have to cram a huge list of awards. Actually what is the relevance of these awards? No one in India cares for who got padma award or not, except those who're giving some competitive exam. and we care, not because we love it, but because we are 'forced' to care about it.
  • All major events, conferences and summits should be held only in Delhi, so we don't have to remember separate place for each event.
  • There must be a blanket ban on asking anything from any sport. its true, the football/hockey/tennis/ wrestling players are not getting enough fame they deserve because of the cricket. So UPSC thinks that such players must be given some honor by asking about them in the competitive exam, but is it my or your fault that such players are not given due recognition in the country? its whole country to be blamed for not giving them respect. why are we singled out and forced to remember their names?
  • ISRO should immediately stop doing all lunar missions because UPSC is not asking about Chandrayaan continuously for last 2 years yet we are forced to remember it.
  • NCERT should also de-recognize all those 50,000 kings and dynasties in Medieval history because both small primary school kids (who then end up hating history) and grown up people like us are forced to cram it, while it has no relevence to any real-life problems.
  • NCERT should also re-write the ancient history suggesting that everything was found in Harappa. so we don't have to cram yet another 20 dozen different locations where 'dancing girl' and bronze statue and dead dog's skeleton etc were found.
  • Except 5-6 main Governer Generals and Viceroy, all other small timers like Sir George Barlow and Lord Northbrook should be removed from history books

so either you(UPSC) stop forcing us to remember such things or say it on face that you're not going to ask anything from it.
because UPSC Playing mind-games and revenge tactics to coaching classes' also hurts the innocent bystanders who waste countless hours in such preparation due to previous trend.
ok this is a non-serious post, so no one needs to turn into a serious-debate

These coaching classes and their notes are all about micro-dissection of each and every small topic.
For example, Boni Yayi (President of a small african country named Benin) came to India sometime ago. Since he is a 'small time'so, coaching classes automatically assume that its very important topic for UPSC-more important than the economic recession, so they'll dissect everything regarding Benin and Boni Yayi in their material and teaching for example
  • 1. Location of Benin in African Map (ok this is probable)
  • 2. Match following: Slave coast, Ivory cost, grain coast (ok this is probable)
  • 3. countries whose borders touch Benin (hmmm may be asked)
  • 4. which year did Benin got independence? (1960, getting micro)
  • 5. Who was President before Boni Yayi? (Mathieu Kérékou, even micro-er, what is the use of knowing all this?)
  • 6. Which political party does Boni Yayi belong to? (he is an Independent canddiate)
  • 7. Which year did Boni Yayi assume office (2006 but what different does that make to the contemporary international politics?)
  • 8. On which dates Boni yayi visited india? (4 Mar 2009 to 7 March 2009)- i still don't understand why remembering such small dates is so important?

thank god these coaching classes don't give height and weight of Boni Yayi in their material, otherwise some people would even cram it for UPSC.

If someone is dead, they'll dissect each and everything about him/her including the names and age of wife and kids of that dead man this is very specific character of magazines like Chronicle and Pratiyogita. And there are people who will even cram such things and then brag it to their peer look i know the xyz famous man's wife's name too! And then his /her peers will even cheer and applaud him for the future topper of UPSC :D

and when such material is printed and give to the students in form of 'material' everyone feels happy and thinks this is the most imp. material and UPSC will never ask anything outside it. Some people would even send their relatives and friends to Delhi to fetch such material in xerox'ed form. (I refer this phenomenon as March- April Floods) Most people assume that a material is only good if its full of information which is hard to remember
I saw Vajiram etc.'s GS notes circulated around during 2009's prelim. it has all micro-information like Sangeet-Natak Kala Acadamy was established in which year? who got Magsaysay in 1995? and so on.
its all about cramming micro information rather than seeing the bigger pictures.

same goes with the primary reason many why people ignore economy topic is because of the 'atmosphere' made by the coaching classes that its not an important topic for prelims and your economy knowledge must start and end @ cramming specific numbers (inflation,CRR,GDP,WPI,CPI etc. of past 2 years) rather than understanding the concepts behind it.

But finally UPSC's GS-2010 bulldozer crushed them all.

Real contest is between u and ur potential best self. If u think u r capable of much more than u r right now, go ahead n prove it - no coaching can mislead u, no upsc can stop u. Be the irressitible force against that immovable object called upsc exam.

JohnRambo
UPSC should itself bring out communiques/advertisements cautioning the public against using the services of these institutes (much like the way SEBI warns investors against using the services of people who claim to provide stock tips for supernormal profits).

Ever increasing Fees

Nethra Said

S..!!!! it true..that they change their words...i have personally experienced it..you know what...
last year 2009 december when i called to ask about vajiram class to attend psychology class..they said...like this...
i asked how much is the fee to join your institute...
person who picked up phone told me its rs.60,000/- for 12 months madam..in case if you are out of state rs.1000/- discount we give you while you join our institute..
then again in 2010 jan & feb when i asked they told its rs.85,000/- & no discounts for students who comes from out of state..
im wandering that suddenly just within days difference they change their words..i was shocked..that was the last i called & i took away my intention of joining coaching class completely...
& one more thing that if you ask originally the students of vajiram their words & explanation regarding their institute will be different.
for putting the advertise there is no end for them..all those bluffs & stuffs makes the student to believe this is best institute rather than any others..
S...!!! offcourse, these institute are their to mint money as much as possible..
so next time anyone who joins any institute dont be TOM & be like JERRY...

About the Teachers of Vajiram and Ravi

Floyd Rose said,
Some observations(Plz verify before believing):
The teaching in vajiram is substandard as per my view. It is only good for those ppl who don't want to buy books and look upto the teachers as 'Gods', as if they know what UPSC is gonna ask and everything would come from their notes. I am a person who feels books are the best companion and look upto the coaching institutes for value addition and which is not easily found in the best available books. But when i look at these so called 'Big' institutes, they have nothing extra to provide. But still ppl join because i feel the awareness level of the Junta is quite low or rather zero. It was the same for me too when i started preparing but i have never believed anything easily and so i find myself in a very comfortable position. Trust me i did not trust their notes and not even referred to them and if i fail im ready to take the blame on me. May be my preparation was lacking. But one thing is there, that i have learnt a lot from books though it took me some time to find which is a good book and which is the bad. But you must know what is bad in order to tell what is good and so you learn a lot in the process and may be more than the teachers.

Now, let me tell you the reality in Vajiram - India's no.1 institute. I'll not name the teachers.

1. Polity -

Better you buy one book like Basu, laxmikanth or kashyap and go through it and you'll learn a lot. Because the teacher would come, switch on his recorder, start speaking and after some minutes will ask you to take down everything at a super fast speed. May be he wants the students to first improve their writing speed and concepts later. At the end of every dictation, your neighbors would ask for your note book if you have managed to keep up the face. I don't doubt the knowledge the person has got but what is the use of the knowledge, if you are not ready to share it. I have seen that sir told about 'extra things' only when there was a question raised in the class. No questions, no value addition.

2. Geography:

The guy is quite knowledgeable and is conceptually sound but he is quite unfortunate that whatever he is teaching doesn't come in the exam. And this fact has got well estbd year after year. I think he is under some assumptions-
* that there is nothing like preliminary examination. You directly sit for the mains examination.
* pt is just for fun. It hardly matters whether you clear it or not. Anyway u get to sit for mains.
I think these should not hold true when he claims that he has 10-15 years of experience. But still i dont what is in his mind. He knows that questions come from Indian geog but he teaches all the concepts in geog and that too not all. I know concepts are imp, but indian geog is also imp. Its his duty to manage everything. And ppl have wrong misconception that Indian geog is all factual. It matters how you teach it. He asks to go for NCERTs. But they are not updated. Where to get all the new power projects, ports etc. They don't come in books. He must know the paper pattern and must teach accordingly. I think the only reason he is there in Vaji is because he is a multipurpose guy. He can teach you geog, stats for GS, stats for Psycho and mental ability.

3. Science:

A new guy being inducted. He has mugged up all the systems of the body and just comes and reproduces them in the class. No conceptual orientation. And if you think there are no concepts in biology, just go to internet and see the online lessons. Again its a matter of how you teach biology. And when you ask him questions, he is all confused and appears as if you are accusing him for murder. May be he is new and can't handle the class, but students should not bear the brunt.

4. Modern History:

Again a new guy next door. spent most of the time telling the events from 1757 - 1857 and when the time came to actually understand 1885 -1947, wrapped up the syllabus like anything. poor mismanagemnt.

5. Eco:
Mr. kapuria is a good person and highly knowledgeable. his way of teaching is absolutely great and it never appeared that he is a misfit. Awesome person. The only best teacher left in Vaji. Wish he could have taken more classes. But he is been keeping not so well.

Mr Sanjeev is also a good teacher. Its just that he did not take enough classes may be because he was engaged somewhere else also. He has knowledge and students would have benefited if he had taken the classes at the right time. He came at the end of the classes when most of the guys had left to their respective homes and moreover it was not wise to attend the long duration classes when self study had mattered the most. Again a case of mismanagemnt.

Conclusion:

First of all i doubt the integrity of the institute. Because every 6-12 months they are increasing the fees like anything. May be they wish to encash the brand value. Because they also know that if UPSC wants, it will be reduced to an institute for the preparation of state services.

They started 8 batches (can u imagine?). Obviously when 8 batches would run, then students are bound to suffer. Because if you have a polity class today, they next class may come after a day, a week, or may be a month. So continuity. We are not computers that whatever we learn, we store it in one part of the brain and activate the same in the next class and interlink it as well. The same thing happened when there was a month gap b/w two classes of economics.

Moreover, i dont understand one thing, what is the use of doing statistics first when you know that your geog syll is left and stats anyway is not going to come in PT because the same teacher teaches stats and geog. Couldn't understand the logic.
Ppl often talk about their printed notes. I would say rubbish. You cant clear UPSC by reading them. No stds. PA notes are damn pathetic. The syllabus got changed, but the notes did not. Good going. Deceive ppl and earn money.

Test series: whatever you have done in the class will come in the test. Mug up notes, do well in tests and enjoy. But they make some sense when you have got coaching from somewhere else or have prepared yourself. One more added advantage you get is the ranking and the evaluation of the ans sheets. So it proves helpful in that respect.

I know it is very easy to criticize but when you see that you have to pay so much money and return on investment is pathetic, you are bound to criticize. 50-60k may not be a big amount for them because they play in crores, but it is for ppl like us. We leave our everything, i mean our jobs and everything and also ask for money from our parents at this age when we know that we would have been supporting them, and then when this kind of thing happens, it is really disappointing, atleast for me. See it may not be a big problem for me to pay such amount, but it is for ppl who come from far off places, esp south and live in those inhuman conditions of rajender nagar looking for a cheaper place to save that extra buck so that it doesn't turn out to be burden on the parents. And then when coaching instis behave like this, it sucks. It is not that i should be disappointed about it; it should disappoint everyone who is gearing up to become a civil servant because these are the ills of the society which need to be removed.

Anyways, i have criticized much. But i just wish to bring to light what the reality is. I think being mature individuals you should not be guided by what i have written. I'll again say - Taste it to believe it. Talk to teachers and ask them everything. Don't just blindly pay them advance fees. Know the ground realities. It's only you who can pull up their socks and hold them accountable.

its a compilation of some very interesting and informative observations made by IO members (especially Floyd Rose for his continuous awareness campaign regarding this looting business.)

When UPSC's GS2010 Bulldozer crushed to coaching classes' factories

Floyd Rose said

I am eagerly waiting for these big coaching institutes like vajiram, mohanty, bhawani singh and all to come up and say that these many questions came from what we taught. I am really happy that UPSC has done it. I am eager to see these big coaching institutes pack up their bags and go back from where they have come. They have looted enough of money.
I think its time for others to learn, i mean the ones who stand in line to get those vajiram tokens. They must understand that Vajiram was good when UPSC refused to change. And now when UPSC has changed, vajiram has refused to. And the question is "Why will they change?". When you have already deposited enough of money why will the person take pains to teach you what is not given in standard books. I think we need a law here to regulate this thriving and looting business of coaching institutes.

I want this to be a wake up call not for these instis but for the student community and disown these instis. Their sub-std teaching must make them realize that UPSC is not their game.

I really laugh at vajiram's advertisement claiming ppl withing top 10 ranks. If there is any guilt or shame left in them they must understand that ppl come out successful not because of their archaic and ridiculus notes but their own efforts.

A lot needs to be done to make aware the student community about what is reality.

Ajay Tomer said

it seems tht upsc  has taken umbrage on the rise of coaching centres... this (general studies prelim 2010) question paper was to break the back of coaching centres .. Even the wide mouth crack ias cant claim they got even 50 from their study material.. excellent UPSC

V.Ahalawat on Mohanty

Recently for public adminstration i joined Synergy(Mr. M.K. Mohanty) but over a period of time i realized that it does'nt worth spending 30000 and more over wasting of your time of six. Before joining his classes i consulted many students and most of them suggested for M.K.Mohanty. His single batch consisted of more than 400 students. In middle phase of my coaching i realized that it is just sheer business for these people. Coaching institutes just cheat. The subject is not that difficult as what these coaching institutes are making it by not clearing out "what to study and what not to study"...

Conclusion

These are my personal conclusions and I’m not interesting in debating about it with anyone.

We all have been living in a mythical world and boundary made by the coaching classes and previous years’ trends which pushes us to cram the micro-items rather than paying attention to the macro-understanding.

Just like the general studies paper, UPSC had put more stress on clarity and understanding of theory rather than mere cramming from Laxmikanth. So theoretically paper wasn’t tough but it looks tough because we’ve been preparing according to the previous trends.

Cramming was of no use

-         Cramming up Constitution’s article numbers, 500 book-author list and year of publication was useless.

-         Same goes for ‘Quotes’ from 1000 different small time (no0b) thinkers from Laxmikanth

-         Same goes with Union Government and polity part which used to be about 20+ marks in earlier papers

-         Since there is nothing new to ask from ‘Administrative system’ (from Laxmikanth) its is of no surprise that they asked things like Line Item Veto and Fragmented bureaucratic system in America.

-         Cramming up all those timelines regarding US ,UK,Japan,France wasn’t useful

-         Pre-independence Committees on civil service (Lee, Macaulay etc) wasn’t useful either.

-         100 laws made by Britishers (charter act, etc etc) their timeline and  provisions- remembering that wasn’t useful either.

-         2 dozen of more Committee list from local administration chapter in Laxmikanth

-         UPSC has intentionally ignored all those small-time thinkers (and their quotes and books) and (small time-Panchayati Raj Committees because their existence or non-existence doesn’t really matter to the evolution of theory or practice of Public Administration.

The importance of following topics is reduced

-         Earlier there were many questions from basic-concepts part but no more.

-         Same goes for union Government , earlier it used to be 18 marks now its only 8 marks.

-         Budgeting’s normal ‘cramming/ Quote type’ like Integrated financial advisor’s post was created in the year 19** etc. questions – ignored.

trend change

-         Since there is nothing new left to ask from Laxmikanth, it’s about time UPSC picks up new topics or twist the old topics.

-         NPA, NPM and CPA and the post-1990 or post LPG topics have gained importance like never before. Just like economy and Development gained importance in the General studies paper.

-         Some questions were beyond the topics covered in normal reading of the usual books, but if UPSC asks everything from the routine books then what difference will be there between UPSC and Primary school-exams?

Why paper was difficult?

-         Anyone who excessively relies on Laxmikanth for Public Administration, automatically ends up digging his own grave (like I had dug mine in 2008’s Prelim)

-         People found the paper difficult, only because they don’t pay much attention to understand the heart of theories and thinkers from the big books like Nicholas, Mohit, Avasthi and Sadana. Just readymade fast-food of Laxmikanth or coaching class material spoils the digestive system sooner or later, and it did.

-         Otherwise at least 80 questions were of the level which any candidate with a moderate level preparation and good understanding of all major-chapters, could have ticked without mistakes.
