I have some confusion for choosing second optional. I want to take philosophy as I felt it is iteresting for me (some portions are interesting).
But I heard that many people are not opting for that. I dont know the reason why ? Is it less scoring ?
I am not finding good material and coaching institutes as compared to other optionals.

Subject selection trend is keeps changing routinely
few years back it was History and Psychology and Philosophy considers to be the
'hot subjects' because most people getting success with that.

right now the trend is changed and the hot subject of today are
Public Administration, Geography, Botany, Zoology, Sociology, Medical Science etc.
actually its not that some subject got more scoring- but the generation and new blood- the winners diverting the traffic.

few months back a senior had told me (now this can be just some rumor but hear it ☺
that
there are 'Centres' i.e.
for Philosophy it was Rajasthan's some college/university - they teach the subject really good there so
successful candidates in that subject were mostly from there or those having the material/guidence of those professors.

so we can assume that generation has passed and the new blood of those universities no longer has hot enough to walk the line.
= low % of Phil. students getting selected = rest believe its no more scoring = further reduction + apply the 'proportional representation rule' @ prelims.

since in the Mains, proportional rep. rule is not applied = you need to get maximum marks in whatever your subject is.
but already low number of people are selected from prelims = % of phil. students getting success = becomes low.

its something like recession of America
when the recession comes- people stop spending so the recession becomes even worse.

we can also contribute this to the power of Advertizement by coaching classes,
when good publicity is given by classes of History / Geography- showing lots of ranker photos in it- then the crowd starts believing those subjects are scoring -so more people fill up the prelims form with those opt. subject = bigger proportional representation rule applied. = more getting passed in prelims = a myth and atmospere is created.

I am not finding good material and coaching institutes as compared to other optionals.
its supply and demand rule, when not much people are opting for it, the Coaching classes switch over to other subjects like Geography etc.

but none of this means that a serious candidate preparing really hard can't get success with Philosophy.

in prelims = calculator not allowed no matter what your subject is.
mains= regular normal calculator allowed

A friend who had given mains earlier told me that in General Studies only normal calculators are allowed. but for engineering subject--

Nimish said...
in mains for engineering subjects ....scientific calculator like the casio fx991 MS is allowed.. i have myself used it a couple of times

i have completed my Master in Public Adm in 2006, but due to some or the
other reason i never done my preparation seriously but now
i want to but i am confused as i am 26yr old now whether 2 peruse my dream
or do a pvt. sec. job ( i am a average student). i have a professional
degree also (PGD HRD & OB)

if you belong to General Category you can give this exam upto 4
trials, and the age limit will be 30 years.

you don't have to be a university gold medalist to excel in this exam,
I've only 2nd Class in my B.Pharm graduation,
i never studied Public Administration in my life except this 2 years
on my own, and yet I clear the prelims.

However working on this exam requires lot patience and strong determination.

the good things about Civil Services

once you become the office,
  1. a good life lot salary,
  2. powers,
  3. social recognition-reputation.

the bad things

  1. extreme high compitition,
  2. the exam takes very long time to finish (each cycle takes almost a year to finish)
  3. and the rest crap that follows the Govt. job - like tolerating the
  4. illiterate ministers, corruption,
  5. seniority -not performance based promotions etc etc

so follow your heart, regarding whether you want to come in the Govt.
job or private job.

> sir,i wish 2 go 4 the post of IFS,do the optionals affect post?plz tell me wat IFS is actully?
there are 2 IFS

Indian Forest Service (IFoS)

UPSC takes seperate exam for it but you've to be a graduate either
from agri/zoology/botany/engineering etc to appear in it.
(refer UPSC.gov.in website for more on it)

and second IFS is

indian foreign service

the normal UPSC civil service exam taken - contains that job.
anyone can give this exam, and optional subjects don't have anything
to do here- its all depends on the merit list.

What do you think of Economic Times as a source of current affairs for CSE?
the 2 pages Economy section given within Indian Express/ Hindu etc
papers is more than sufficient.
Economic Times is / will be helpful, but it'll go in to minute details & data on Economy== lot time wasted. you only need the broad ideas and information on Economy.

no need to follow them, UPSC never asks anything related to them.

I have decided Pub. Ad as my first optional but in a highly
dubious situation for the second one.
I'm very and equally interested in Sociology, Psychology, Geography
and English Literature.
I'm so good and fascinated by literature that I've already written a book
well then you should take up English Literature (or any other
language's literature)

find some professor etc who's giving tutiton to BA or MA's English
classes and take it.
interest in literature is one thing but for the exam oriented
preparation of English lit = you've to see how the things and syllabus
go in actual study.
in Public Administration this can be done via self-study but in
literature there are no direct copy paste books. (esp regarding the
paper-1)
[this is my self experience dealing with Gujarati literature.]

Good luck in your journey.

First, Is it possible to prepare for the exam and crack it in 2011,
when i'll be giving my university exams in April-May and then CSE in
June?

if you start preparing hard and serious from right now then yes it is.
otherwise if you delay, then in 2011 you'll have lot to study in small
time so then you'll either have to reduce your studies of the B.Tech
or of this UPSC exam. and hence problem in both.

What do u suggest for S & T wrt to Prelims & Mains? Thanks again..

for sci & tech
refer Chronicle's magazine regularly (they put seperate S&T Section in
every issue)
also read newspapers and for certain things like
nano-tech etc refer wikipedia. (see the mains syllabus of s&t and
gather material from wikipedia- and other sites on internet
accordingly.)

no need to get into very minutes details - all you need to know is the broad idea of the issue and How can it help the Human beings / Nature?

Do we have to make notes from NCERT's ( for any subject)? I mean, does UPSC
asks questions pertaining to factual data directly from NCERT's ?
I will be making notes from standard textbooks (other than NCERT's) as
prescribed by you but not sure whether i need to make notes from NCERT's or
not?

no need to make NCERT's notes.
they're only for getting clarity in the basic concepts.
factual data directly from NCERT's ?
- not anymore, beside its like 5 important fact lying around in 50
pages of NCERT.
the fact and data will be well presented in any other magazines'
prelim special issues than NCERT.

(i.e. get Chronicle's mag's. November to April 2008 Issues they've
almost everything of it.)

give more attention to
NCERT's 12th std :
themes in modern History part3
Colonial Revenue system -economy etc.
and Human Geography. std 12.
physical environment std 11.
and Indian Economic Development Std 11.
rest of the stuff can even safely be ignored.

regarding Law-
well actually you shouldn't take it unless you've done or are doing or
planning to do LLB etc courses.
(self experience - in Pharmacy we had
NDPS, Drug & Costmetics Act etc so i too was preparing with law during
college times for UPSC but then i realised- this is just way too
different things.)

is political science better or pub ad becoz i didnt find much diff in both of them,,i feell they r almost one and the same..wat do u think bhaii?? as one of optional would be geography and the other one laging to take whether pubad or politcal science??? and the scope of gaining marks of this combination(geo&pol sci or geo&pubad) plz let me...know bhaiiiiii wats ur idea....

My Answer:-

Public Administration
because political sci. will help you in General Studies -only up to Polity -Constitution part.
While Public Administration's topics-
Evolution of Indian Administration ,
polity-
state-central administration -
Panchayati Raj etc help you a lot more in G-S, Essay-Interview.

But this doesn't mean that nobody from political science gets selected in the service.

I'm only giving my opinion based on the 'Greed factor' – that how much is the subject going to help you in General Studies.

*update by Rath Baria*

many areas of GS being covered in political science. They include: Polity, India & the World(a separate section in GS mains), International Relations, International Organizations, Panchayati Raj(its included too under Local Govt. & Politics) & Bilateral relations. These area do have a lot of weight in GS Mains. And not just this, Political Science is CRUCIAL for Essay too as every year at least 1 topic based on Political Science comes. Enjoy.
So political science is no less than Public Administration when it comes to synergy with GS.

Mr R. Asks

public admn as 1 option i have shotlisted the foll subjects as a 2nd opt :

geography.
economics.
maths

i m in s.y.b.sc.i.t. hope you can guide me according to your knowledge.

My Answer:-

Economics is good only for B.com students
Maths - only if you are going to do M.Sc in Maths.
Geography good for everyone but only if he/she has interest in it.

tip- read the NCERT of any subject that you want to take as your optional.
if you get bored reading it- then that subject is not for you.

(you don't have buy all NCERTs for that- you can read them online using the link on my blog.)

'A' Asks

is it that the strategy which u have told in ur blog for preparation of pubad from various books like laxmi kanth & various other authors....... should even begineers  like me to start of with same strategy like the one which u told in ur blog....????? or to first start of with laxmikanth and finish it and then to go to other books is it kind of that sort????plzzzzzzzz let me know..

My Answer:-

stick with the stretegy given in my blog.
it applies to all- beginners and those already preparing.
because even if you start reading Laxmikanth and finish it and then take up other books- you'll have to re-read the Laxmikanth again to get those 'topic-connections.'
so read everything in parallel and make notes simultaneously.

Mr. P asks

In GS , i have started with History and have completed the book of mordern history (A brief handbook on mordern history by spectrum ) ,what else shouls i study apart from that as when i attempted questions from previous papers , i got demolarised as i couldnt see more that 50% questions there ...

Whenever u finish studying a chapter and then attempt questions on it from previous papers ,what is ur success ratio .. how many u get it in GS as the syllabus is too vast ...

So plz tell be about history for GS .. any book or any tip .. I want to finish it and then move to other topic of GS ...

My Answer:-

hi,
for G/S History of prelims
apart from the Spectrum
you'd also need to see the History of Ancient and Medieval India. (refer Chronicle's 2008's Prelims special Issues. or Wizard's old issues dealing with that.)
+ Freedom Struggle by Bipin Chandra (NBT Publication)

* Spectrum and Bipin are for mains = dealing with the 'analytical part of History', and for prelims you need to have more fact and data.

also in History- nowadays they generally ask things related to education and economy and culture, society. so whenever you read those things- do it carefully.

and don't worry about solving the papers-
when i was a new comer like you - i couldn't even get 20% of previous question papers solved. and at that time when i used to talk with my friends- they'd be knowing everything. and that'd frustrate me a lot.
it happens when you are new. but every experienced guy is newcomer someday.
in 2008s's paper there were only 2 questions in History- one was from the 'Who was owner of this Newspaper' kinda easy thing- so I could solve it.

even with my best preparation this year- i got only 70/150 in prelims g.S = that's not even 50%.
(i could answer almost all the History questions correctly- because they were very easy in 2009's paper.)

but then i couldn't solve much in Geography and Currents.

so- prepare your best- read -revise - make notes- as much as you can. but don't put pressure that you can't get all answers on G.s.- because nobody can do that.
Prelims G.S is so wide. you can never cover enough of it.

The main advantages of Geography as an optional are:

• Availability of good material and guidance. There are many successful

candidates with this optional, which makes easy access to strategy required.

• Geography is helpful for the GS prelims &mains, essay, interview and even for

some other optionals.

• The map questions make it a very scoring subject.

• There is enormous scope for innovations in writing which can boost the scores.

• Students from science background find it easy to tune to this subject.

certain points, which should be kept in mind while preparing

• Read the basics well and then think on your own about how to make innovative

answers.

• Because of availability of much material, there is a tendency to do a research-

kind of preparation. This is highly counter productive.

• Prepare basics well with good clarity. You may refer the standard book for this.

Then if required just scan through other books for any different dimension. Do

not start mugging each and every book from end-to-end.

• Take the topic, do intense questioning to get clarity. Then in a logical manner

prepare a structure for the notes.

• Use lot of maps, diagrams, flow charts, graphs, etc. Be as innovative as

possible.

World Map: This question is highly scoring. The aspirant should spend good amount

of time in mastering the world map. The examiner is only interested in testing the

basics and important places. But some times very difficult map points are asked as

done in 2003. But the preparation should not be based on that year's question. In

general, focus should be on preparing the basic points, which are more likely to be

asked. If preparation is based on 2003 paper, then it is not possible to master all

small and insignificant map points. Finally it will be counter productive, as there is a

chance of forgetting even the basics.

While writing the 10 words, you need not put a sentence. Just put down as much

info as possible using ";". Also, underline the most significant fact.

For example - Rekjavik: Iceland; capital city; northernmost capital; very cold climate;

midnight sun; geological studies; Mid-Atlantic ridge;

India Map:

This question is highly scoring and the candidate should prepare well. Here also only

the basics and important points are being asked. So, first analyse the previous

questions and prepare accordingly.

In writing the answer, try to put as much as you know.

Eg. Kaveri: Karnataka-Kerala-TN; Source-Talakaveri; Western Ghats; Delta in TN;

major river; highly used for irrigation; Inter-state river water dispute; Mettur dam;

Krishnasagar dam; Tiruchi; hydroelectricity; ……..

Suggested Reading:

Old NCERT books are better than the new ones for basic clarity. You should also go

through the new books for the latest data and analysis.

While emailing to a friend, I wrote this, and posting it on blog as well, for the use of others who're working for 2010/11.

In prelims,
its very tempting to attempt all question, sometimes we feel we'll get them all correct & that its just 0.33 marks to lose, but in reality we generally end up loosing 8-10 marks easily in negative marking. (the Main Reason why I lost in 2008 and Why I cracked it in 2009.)
and its pretty stiff competition. so never take any gambling. if some question is hard then its hard for everyone- so better leave it than lose in negative marks.

those who go to coaching classes,

UPSC prelim negative marking and coaching classes
have to face mock tests every week, so they know how evil the negative marking is. they give the tests in groups, & results are given quickly.
so immediately they know who scored more and how much they lost in negative marks.
hence they become very careful in answering. that helps them succeed. its not that they get to know something really wonderful which a candidate preparing at home doesn't, from the regular books.
In the Prelims,
Its not that the successful candidate is a way too much smart
than you,
but only that he looses less marking in negative marking
than you do.

take a few mock tests at home regularly, that'll strengthen your capacity in dealing with the tempting questions and negative marking.

I wish everyone of you good luck for next year. I'm sure you'll crack prelims this time.

I thought it was going to be declared on 14th August just like Last Year, but thanks to the Good Friend Gurpreet,I came to know that it was declared yesterday (4th August 09). And I've checked it,
Finally after spending 3 years of my life and 2 trials,
Yes I've cleared the prelims.

civil service prelims 2009 result

If you had appeared in the Exam, and want to check your result
goto following link

Best of Luck
and thank a lot everybody for showering your good wishes on me.

AND,
I want to tell everyone - the reason of my success is nothing but the same strategies I've posted on my Blog.

AND that I've never gone to any of the Delhi's big and Expensive Coaching Classes.
I was a student at the Gujarat Government run institution for civil service preparation called SPIPA , Ahmedabad (Sardar Patel Institute of Public Administration).

Since the UPSC doesn't give a marksheet or cutoff of the prelims, its left to the people to guess the 'cutoff.'
My score in 2009's prelim is 112/120 in Public Administration and 70/150 in General Studies.
Last year when I didnot clear the prelims I had 95+/120 in Public Administration, and 85/150 in General Studies (but I had attended many wrong questions in General Studies hence I lost due to negative markings.) - those things are explained in detail (regarding how not to prepare) in my tips section on the right hand side navigation panel of this website- do follow them.
