While emailing to a friend, I wrote this, and posting it on blog as well, for the use of others who're working for 2010/11.

In prelims,
its very tempting to attempt all question, sometimes we feel we'll get them all correct & that its just 0.33 marks to lose, but in reality we generally end up loosing 8-10 marks easily in negative marking. (the Main Reason why I lost in 2008 and Why I cracked it in 2009.)
and its pretty stiff competition. so never take any gambling. if some question is hard then its hard for everyone- so better leave it than lose in negative marks.

those who go to coaching classes,

UPSC prelim negative marking and coaching classes
have to face mock tests every week, so they know how evil the negative marking is. they give the tests in groups, & results are given quickly.
so immediately they know who scored more and how much they lost in negative marks.
hence they become very careful in answering. that helps them succeed. its not that they get to know something really wonderful which a candidate preparing at home doesn't, from the regular books.
In the Prelims,
Its not that the successful candidate is a way too much smart
than you,
but only that he looses less marking in negative marking
than you do.

take a few mock tests at home regularly, that'll strengthen your capacity in dealing with the tempting questions and negative marking.

I wish everyone of you good luck for next year. I'm sure you'll crack prelims this time.
