[My Tips] Preparing Current Affairs & Essay (from Newspapers)
if you want to see a 'Demo' of how exactly to filterout the exam-oriented important news from the newspaper

[Prelim tricks] Learn to dissect the current affairs for prelim, mains, interview
In my earlier thread, I've explained why newspapers are important, and why shouldn't you rely on magazines for current issues. (here)
In the present trend of UPSC G/S prelim
- Geography (current based)
- Current Affairs
- Polity
- People / Award etc
Most of the questions from them are based on current affairs,
So Never miss reading the newspaper on any day.
Now the issue comes – how to read newspaper to prepare current affair – this is important cause most student either glance over the newspaper in 3 minutes and some waste 3 hours reading each and every detail.

What is not important in newspaper / Current Affairs

(from General Studies POV : Point of View)
Following things should be ignored | |

| Violence |

What is important in newspaper then?

- For more on what's imp in current affairs- refer the old question papers of UPSC
(AND MAKE A NOTE OUT OF IT- keep a diary, cut and file the imp articles / maps / charts from newspaper.) How to make a note, & why is it important ? – its explained on this page.
Why Read Editorials?
Because the regular news won't talk of what happened in History or what are the good / bad points of a particular topic. But the editorials will give you the 'big picture.' Along with the suggestions for reforms so it also helps in writing mains + Essay. + interview too. Many of the articles/editorials will be completely criticizing anything and everything of Administration. So be careful about what to read and what to skip – because your answers have to be constructive criticism and positive "there is still hope for reform" and "Democracy is the best way to run country " etc.
Cause if criticizing everything about Administration was going to make you an IAS officer then every reporter of Aaj Tak, NDTV and Zee News would be a District Collector. You've to be constructive, creative, visionary and positive in your answers, opinions and criticisms –only then you'll get more marks. I'm saying this here because when you are reading anything in newspaper- that's not just one shot to prelims but also helps you in mains, essay, interview as well.
Current Affairs is a year long continuous process.
This process doesn't take more than 1 hour per day. And its worth it, cause current affairs is not something that you can develop reading some book for 15 days before examon April 2010- lot 'current affair special' books will come in market from Wizard, Chronicle, Pratiyogita Darpan and many more but if you've been following the newspaper through out the year & making your own diary- then you won't need to read them AND if you've not maintained a diary then you won't be able to remember much from these books – and will end up wasting 15 days reading it.)
WHAT IF You DON'T read newspapers?
Then this will be your situationOn April 2010- you'll be blank in Current affair and will start reading any of those 'current affairs special book' as mentioned above – but since you've never read newspaper, you won't be able to cover the book very fast- and it's a thick book, and you won't be able to remember everything you read, you won't even have time to revise it, so in the end you'll be ignoring either your G/S's rest topics or your Opt. Subject or the current affairs itself, and ultimately losing heavy marks in Prelims.
Newspapers Help in Essay Writing.
In the mains you've to write a compulsory Essay paper which is worth 200 M and they're counted in the merit list. There are many books / guides for essay writing in the market as well, but if you write from it, you'll end up writing a street quality , cheap, strerotype school essay and getting very few marks.
Your essay has to be unique, precise, showing your vast knowledge and understanding of the subject which can't be done reading 2 page essay in some cheap guide book.
If you analyse last 10 years papers of Essay (posted here)
Then you'll notice that they generally ask essay from following themes ONLY
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
That'll help you have sufficient knowledge , viewpoints and ideas to write a 200 Marks worth essay.
And its not a one day process- you follow it through out the year.
If you prepare your current affairs topics this way then you should have not much trouble clearing the UPSC civil service IAS IPS Exam.
*UPDATE*
this stretegy works, and I'm living example of it.
I've cleared UPSC's Prelim 2009 following it.
Refer this post regarding my prelims result.
How to make notes quickly?also if you feel its taking too much time,
don't write everything down-
just highlight the imp lines in imp articles and cut and file it (or as stick it on rough big note/book- like those share markets 'company's annual report books') .
and in the diary-write only the imp event/names/books/appointment/businessmen etc.
also many editorials are very big but the essence of their thought can be summerized in 5-6 lines- write them, but if the article has given too much details- then file it instead of writing, to save time.

ReplyDeleteBest wishes for Mains
hi...thnx for d inputs..
ReplyDeletei started makin notes June onwards...but smhow cudnt maintain d daily routine..it took me v long n i felt i was compromisin on traditional GS n optionals by givin too much to current affairs (newspapers+mag.).
I have started agn though...from 1st Sep onwards...I read d newspaper daily being selectiv along wit editorials bt din make notes in last 3 months...ive marked them up..shud i jolt it all down or jus concentrate on d issues now onwards...?
I undstnd its imp now...u r v right abt those special Currnt affairs magazine issues...thats crazy...
thnx a lot.
@Vandna,
ReplyDeletewhatever is gone is gone,
there is no point in relooking at all the current topics from June to September. use the magazine issues to cover them up.
but, concentrate on making notes from now on.
also if you feel its taking too much time,
don't write everything down-
just highlight the imp lines in imp articles and cut and file it (i stick it on rough big note- like those share markets 'company's annual report books') .
and in the diary-write only the imp event/names/books/appointment/businessmen etc.
also many editorials are very big but the essence of their thought can be summerized in 5-6 lines- write them, but if the article has given too much details- then file it instead of writing, to save time.
Thanks again mrunal..

Michael
sir is tehre a specific cut off for GS also.... i mean if someone has scored enough in his optional and has not scored well in gs .... wont he get a call.... imean if he has scored well abobe total cut off marks and scored poorly in gs will he get a call for mains?
ReplyDeletei placed a link tou your site....very useful blog
ReplyDeleteHi Mrunal,
ReplyDeleteThanx for the blog.
Im from Bombay and get the Hindu one day late. I was a TOI fan but left it after comparing it with Indian Express. Rite now, I have subscribed to both Indian Express and The Hindu(previous day's). I had subscribed to both to decide which one is better for me. But now I think I'll keep both.
On a gn day, I first read Hindu editorial only as most news has been covered in IE previous day. After that I read that days IE. Also, Sci and Tech in Hindu Thursday which I read on friday.
I prepare notes from both. But I feel that my newspaper notes are gettin too exhaustive.
I have never seen anyone's newspaper notes and am worried whether I am doing it right. Whether I am jotting down too much from certain articles.
I request you to please upload ur notes of any particular day, maybe you cud make notes from tomorrow's newspaper and upload the scans. That way we cud compare ur notes with tomorrow's newspaper and make decisions about the size of our notes.
I wud also like to know which newspaper you refer to and how much time you take to complete reading and jotting notes from a newspaper.
One last thing, do u think this is the right time to start preparing for prelims 2010.
Thanx for reading...
@bombayboy,
ReplyDeleteI would not recommend you put your time in 2 newspapers.
Indian Express alone is enough in my opinion and experience.
ideally you should wind up all the daily newspaper reading and note making in 2-2.5 hours
regarding the right time for preparation , well you are not yet late for preparing 2010's prelim.
thanx fr replyin...
ReplyDeleteI think I'll go with ur opinion and get only IE. Do u thnk it's necessary to read Hindu editorial from online edition.
U havent said anythng about posting ur newspaper notes.
Which newspapers and magazine do u read?
Also, regarding my giving prelims 2010, i shud hav also informed u that I havent prepared for mains. I started thinkin bout appearing for CSE in late Oct 2009 and started preparing for CSE(prelims or mains) in Dec 2009. So if I prepare for Prelims now and clear 2010, will 4 months time-June to September-enuf for mains preparation.
Thanx for the help...
@bombayboy,
ReplyDeleteI refer only Indian Express and How I make the notes that I've explained already in the article itself.
Regarding your question on whether you're late or not?
well, if you work hard then you're not yet late for this, but only you can decide whether you're really prepared for this year's attempt or not, I can only give you a positive feedback but you'll have to ride the tiger by yourself.
thanx for the replies...
ReplyDeletejst one more thng before i lay this thing to rest....
How many foolscap pages do ur notes of one day's IE run into??
thanx again
@Bombay,
ReplyDeleteit all depends on the important news of the given day. Sometimes it can all be covered in half page sometimes it'll take more than 4 pages.
I am planning to take exam in 2011.so when should i start making notes for prelims as well as mains.is their any reason that they will only ask from one year Affairs.or should i have to make notes from past year too.
ReplyDeletehello sir, i too have the same doubt. to take exam in 2011 when is it better to start reading newspapers and taking notes? please reply sir
